Abstract
Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a significant health issue, especially in the developing world, and has been linked to a lot of psychological morbidity, especially depression, which can negatively impact the treatment outcomes and quality of life.
Objective: To find out the incidence of depression in patients with new pulmonary tuberculosis as they visit a tertiary care hospital.
Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar between December 2023 and June 2024. Non-probability consecutive sampling was used to include 267 newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients aged 18 to 65 years. Patients who had a previous mental condition or were severely comorbid were not included. The patient had been evaluated using the PHQ-9 to measure depression. The analysis of the data was done with the help of SPSS version 25, and the results were reported in the form of frequencies and percentages.
Results: Of all the 267 patients, 111 (41.6%) had been diagnosed with depression. Females had a higher incidence of depression (47.8) than males (36.8). Patients with lower socio-economic status were more likely to be depressed (49.6%) compared to those with middle socio-economic status (32.8%). Most of the depressed patients were aged between 26 and 45 years.
Conclusion: Gender and socio-economic status. Depression is very common in patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis. Early psychological intervention and regular screening are necessary to enhance adherence to treatment and patient outcomes in general.
