Abstract
Bell’s palsy is a condition characterized by weakness or paralysis of facial muscles due to facial nerve dysfunction, impacting symmetry, functional abilities, and quality of life. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Kinesio Taping have been proposed as effective interventions to enhance recovery. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of PNF combined with Kinesio Taping against standard exercises in improving facial nerve function, reducing synkinesis, and enhancing quality of life in patients with facial palsy.
Methods
A total of 68 participants with Bell’s palsy were randomly assigned into two groups: Group A (n = 34) received PNF combined with Kinesio Taping, while Group B (n = 34) performed standard exercises. Interventions were conducted over six weeks. Outcome measures included the Sunnybrook Facial Grading System, Functional Disability Index (FDI), Synkinesis Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ), and Facial Clinimetric Evaluation (FaCE) Scale. Pre- and post-intervention scores were analyzed for statistical significance using paired and independent t-tests.
Results
Group A showed significant improvements across all parameters compared to Group B. The Sunnybrook score increased from 41.91 ± 8.53 to 81.29 ± 9.26 in Group A (P < 0.001), while Group B showed a modest increase from 42.50 ± 8.89 to 46.68 ± 9.03 (P < 0.001). Similarly, FDI scores in Group A improved from 47.76 ± 5.65 to 91.50 ± 5.33, compared to 47.88 ± 5.78 to 52.91 ± 6.76 in Group B (P < 0.001). SAQ scores significantly decreased in Group A from 19.32 ± 3.40 to 4.50 ± 3.38, while Group B exhibited a slight reduction from 19.68 ± 3.40 to 17.76 ± 3.85 (P < 0.001). FaCE scores in Group A increased from 36.91 ± 8.53 to 85.47 ± 8.48, compared to a marginal increase from 37.50 ± 8.89 to 41.15 ± 8.38 in Group B (P < 0.001).
Conclusion
PNF combined with Kinesio Taping is significantly more effective than standard exercises in improving facial nerve function, reducing synkinesis, and enhancing quality of life in patients with facial palsy. This study highlights the importance of incorporating targeted, therapist-guided interventions for optimal rehabilitation outcomes.
