Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), specifically semaglutide, have emerged as potent modulators of cardiometabolic health. Originally approved for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), recent landmark trials (notably SELECT and SOUL) have expanded its clinical utility to include cardiovascular (CV) risk reduction in patients with obesity and established CV disease, regardless of glycemic status.


Objective: This review synthesizes current evidence regarding the efficacy of semaglutide in reducing Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) and explores the physiological mechanisms—beyond weight loss—that contribute to its cardioprotective profile.
