Abstract
The condition known as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a chronic metabolic disease, is frequently associated with psychological conditions like stress and depression, which can impair glycemic control and overall disease management. To assess the correlation between depressive symptoms and glycemic control in T2DM patients and to evaluate the association among perceived stress and glycemic control in diabetics with or without symptoms of depression. 400 T2DM patients who visited the General Medicine Outpatient Department of Narayana Medical College and Hospital in Andhra Pradesh participated in a prospective observational cross-sectional study. Depression and perceived stress were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), respectively. Clinical and biochemical parameters, including Body mass index (BMI), lipid profile, fasting blood sugar, and HbA1c, were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 23. Depression and perceived stress were highly prevalent among the study participants. Significant associations were observed between depression, elevated HbA1c, fasting blood sugar, obesity, dyslipidemia, prolonged duration of diabetes, and lack of physical activity. Psychological stress and depression are common among patients with T2DM and are significantly connected with poor glycemic control. Routine psychological assessment should be integrated into diabetic care.
