Abstract
This study examined the viability of algae as a sustainable feedstock for biofuels and the presence of indigenous algal diversity, chemical classification and suitability for biofuel development. Conducted in the Malakand region of Pakistan, the study found 240 algal species among six separate taxonomic divisions. Two algae classification techniques were used; light microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM); both were effective for species classification. Of the species identified, Spirogyra crassa demonstrated the most promising overall potential with high lipid content and favorable growth in BG-11 culture media; these components show good potential for biofuels. Biochemical analysis indicated high concentrations of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates by Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) confirmed the presence of palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids provide the fuel stability and calorific value. Spirogyra crassa had superior oxidative stability and energy density indicating its potential for production as biofuel. The study promotes the use of algae-based biofuels within the renewable energy sector because of their ability to lower carbon emissions.
