Abstract
Maternal nutrition is essential in determining both maternal and infant health outcomes. Adequate nutrition during pregnancy is essential for optimal fetal growth, organ development, and metabolic programming, while maternal undernutrition leads to complications such as intrauterine development restriction, poor birth weight, and ongoing medical hazards. This review critically examines the influence of maternal nutrition on short- and long-term infant health, focusing on key macronutrients and micronutrients like protein, iron, folic acid, iodine, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. The paper highlights the effectiveness of nutritional interventions, including supplementation, food fortification, and dietary changes, in enhancing the health of mothers and babies, especially in middle-income and low-income nations. Despite clear biological benefits, the success of these interventions is often constrained by socioeconomic disparities, cultural barriers, and limited healthcare access. The review underscores the importance of context-specific, equity-focused strategies to overcome these challenges. Additionally, it emphasises the significance of adopting a life-course perspective, recognising the long-term consequences of inadequate maternal nutrition on child development and the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood. In conclusion, the review calls for further research to optimise maternal nutrition interventions and improve global health outcomes.
