Abstract
Asplenium dalhousiae Hook. and Asplenium trichomanesL. are used in traditional medicine, but insufficient data is available on their anticancerous activity. The extracts of both ferns were testedagainst human cancer cell linesviz.MCF 7 (breast carcinoma) and HCT 116 (Human colorectalcarcinoma). The activity was analyzed employing MTT assay to assess growth inhibition and cellviability percentages. This method measures the reduction of yellow MTT(3-4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide) by mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase to form dark blueformazan which is largely specific to a viable cell and can be extracted with an organic solvent andthen quantified by spectrophotometry. Results were compared with standard anticancerous drugdoxorubicin. The results thus obtained showed selective anticancerous activity. Species-specific effectwas observed, ethanolic fronds extract ofAsplenium trichomanesL. displayed strongest activity against both cellline with 90.12±0.31a% growth in hibitionagainstHCT116and83±0.31a%againstMCF 7 cell line. Extracts ofA. trichomanesperformed better as compared toA. dalhousiae.Bothspecies appeared to be potent inducers of necrotic cell death.
